Blackpool Council's Head of Planning says that he wants to ensure ""potentially damaging development is managed and controlled” (not stopped just 'held to account'?)
Many including me were surprised to find that the most iconic seaside destination's Head of Planning is a key partner in delivery of the biggest infrastructure project ever in the UK.
This plan will be The Big One, the ride of ours and future generations lives.
The plan is called a “geological disposal facility” and involves mining a massive hole under the seabed. Into this would be dropped something our government is eager to get shot of. Not old wind turbine blades or solar panels but very hot (200 degrees c and counting) atomic wastes. These wastes, a product of decades worth of UK and foreign reactors are currently cooled at Sellafield by millions of gallons of fresh water a day. The wastes continue to arrive every week.
The plan is for rocks under the seabed to act as a giant heat sink.
Blackpool can rest easy though. It is Beatrix Potter country earmarked for this diabolic plan by the developer, Nuclear Waste Services. The Lake District coastline and Irish Sea are the direct atomic sacrifice zone but the repercussions would be felt in Blackpool too of wastes too hot for our geology to handle. If you love the Lake District coast and the oceans we all rely on for life on this fragile planet then take action here: PETITION
